Phonics

I have made every child a phonics pack, please use it over the weekend and over the half term holidays. The work you do at home makes a huge difference and we can tell when you have worked at home. Two weeks is a long time so please try and fit it is as much as possible, it only needs to be a few mins per day. You can take the pack on holiday and the RWI videos are great to watch. This is the only homework I would like you to focus on as it is our priority over the next few weeks.

Below is a copy of the letter that is in your phonics pack:

In this pack there are a selection of flashcards and games to help practise our phonics reading skills. Please can you practise this at home, as we are off for two weeks it is really important that we continue our phonics during the holidays as the Phonics Screening will take place from Monday 10th June to Friday 14th June. Please note these screenings will take place over the week, so please continue to practise during the week, we are back at school. I will let you know when you child has completed their screening, but I cannot give results as the score threshold may change. You will find out if your child has passed or will retake in year two in their report. If there is anything your child needs to focus on, I will write it on the pack and I have put specific sound sheets in so you can practise these at home.

 

When reading these words it is important we are accurate not speedy, I know for RWI we have been focusing on being speedy readers to move up in groups.

The Phonics screening is about accuracy, we have been practising in class please can you follow this at home, the children will know what to do:

Read the word

During the screening I can’t prompt them so it is best they get in the habit of the above. By practising they will do it automatically.

There were lots of children who unfortunately couldn’t quiz this week as they hadn’t read at home. We do try and listen to your child read in school at least once a week, but there are times when we can’t so it’s really important that you read at home, especially as we have the Phonics screening coming up in a few weeks (10th June). The children need as much practise as possible.

These challenges link to the wider area of our curriculum, there are some activities to help with retrival and some with topics that are coming up.

Below you will find the optional challenges linking to the topics and areas of learning that we will be exploring this half term. These fun challenges are designed to cover a range of skills without being stressful or time consuming for you at home. You are welcome to complete them in any order you wish and it would be lovely to see pictures or examples of things that the children have enjoyed at home.

Handwriting

Please keep up with handwriting practise at home, this week we have been practising ‘o’ and ‘c’. Already in a week I have seen a huge difference in handwriting, we appreciate all you are doing at home, thank you.

In your child’s yellow reading book there are log in cards for computers and tablets, ideally a tablet would be easier as they can use their finger to practice the formations. The online programme is great at helping learn the direction of each letter and where to start but it is important that they are using pencils to practice writing on paper. We have been learning a rhyme to help us hold our pencils correctly. We have focused on sitting at the table properly, feet on the floor our non writing hand holding our book or paper, sitting up straight. In the purple books there is a letter formation sheet and the pencil rhyme. I would like to see on the next page lots of ‘a’ and ‘d’ on the line and circle your best one.

Computing

Can you look around your house and draw/ take a photo of four ways in which technology is used. Can you log onto Numbots independently?
