Year 1 Homework 26.6.24

Reading

Please continue to read regularly at home and sign the challenge boxes, just a reminder it is one box per day. It was great to see lots of certificates today, keep it up.

Maths:

Keep talking about the time, go on this interactive clock below, can you make different o’clock times and half past times? Where should the minitue hand be? Where should the hour hand be? These games on top marks are great. Keep working on counting in 2s,5s and 10s and use hit the button to practise addition, subtraction and number bonds. Click on number bonds then choose 1-10, 1-20 and up to 100, this will help with fluency.

Optional Challenges!

It is wonderful that the children are so excited about their learning and to see how keen they are to continue this outside of school. We welcome any opportunity to share these learning experiences with you at home, which is why we have created ‘optional challenges’ across each year group which can be explored over this Summer 2 half term.

These challenges link to the wider area of our curriculum, there are some activities to help with retrival and some with topics that are coming up.

Below you will find the optional challenges linking to the topics and areas of learning that we will be exploring this half term. These fun challenges are designed to cover a range of skills without being stressful or time consuming for you at home. You are welcome to complete them in any order you wish and it would be lovely to see pictures or examples of things that the children have enjoyed at home.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Year 1 Homework 14.6.24

First of all thank you for all the phonics work you have done at home, it has been a very busy week and I am so proud of everyone, they have made made so much progress.

My homework this weekend is to enjoy it together and catch up on some reading. The children will be back to their normal RWI groups on Monday, so books have gone home.

Reading

Please continue to read regularly at home and sign the challenge boxes, just a reminder it is one box per day.

Phonics

I have made every child a phonics pack, please use it over the half term holidays. The work you do at home makes a huge difference and we can tell when you have worked at home. Two weeks is a long time so please try and fit it is as much as possible, it only needs to be a few mins per day. You can take the pack on holiday and the RWI videos are great to watch. This is the only homework I would like you to focus on as it is our priority over the holiday break

Below is a copy of the letter that is in your phonics pack:

In this pack there are a selection of flashcards and games to help practise our phonics reading skills. Please can you practise this at home, as we are off for two weeks it is really important that we continue our phonics during the holidays as the Phonics Screening will take place from Monday 10th June to Friday 14th June. Please note these screenings will take place over the week, so please continue to practise during the week, we are back at school. I will let you know when you child has completed their screening, but I cannot give results as the score threshold may change. You will find out if your child has passed or will retake in Year 2 in their report. If there is anything your child needs to focus on, I will write it on the pack and I have put specific sound sheets in so you can practise these at home.

If you have any questions please email me.

When reading these words it is important we are accurate not speedy, I know for RWI we have been focusing on being speedy readers to move up in groups.

The Phonics screening is about accuracy, we have been practising in class please can you follow this at home, the children will know what to do:

 Scanning for the special friends

Fred talk

Read the word

During the screening I can’t prompt them so it is best they get in the habit of the above. By practising they will do it automatically.

If you have any questions about the phonics screening please email me.

Ask your child which sounds they have been learning this week, you can watch the videos to practise at home.

Handwriting

Please keep up with handwriting practise at home, this week we have been practising ‘o’ and ‘c’. Already in a week I have seen a huge difference in handwriting, we appreciate all you are doing at home, thank you.

Once you log in, you can click on free play to explore at home or Year 1, there will be a box that comes up that says:

Find the letter ‘c’ and ‘o’, click on easy letters, then click on the ‘o’ and ‘c’ at the bottom of the screen. You can click on the play button to see how you write the letter, then click on try and the bottom of the screen under the play button so you can practice each letter.

In your child’s yellow reading book there are log in cards for computers and tablets, ideally a tablet would be easier as they can use their finger to practice the formations. The online programme is great at helping learn the direction of each letter and where to start but it is important that they are using pencils to practice writing on paper. We have been learning a rhyme to help us hold our pencils correctly. We have focused on sitting at the table properly, feet on the floor our non writing hand holding our book or paper, sitting up straight. In the purple books there is a letter formation sheet and the pencil rhyme. I would like to see on the next page lots of ‘a’ and ‘d’ on the line and circle your best one.

Computing

Can you look around your house and draw/ take a photo of four ways in which technology is used. Can you log onto Numbots independently?

Lenten Boxes

In the lead up to Lent, we have been thinking about how we can support others in our local community. It has become an Our Lady’s tradition to make and swap Lenten boxes. This year, each Year 1 child will make a Lenten box that they will give to their buddy in Year 4. Year 4 will also be making a Lenten box for Year 1.

We kindly ask that these boxes are made during the half term break and brought back to school by Wednesday 21st February. Year 1 have brought home a note today in their reading folders to give them some ideas for decorating the Lenten box for their buddy.

Once swapped, these Lenten boxes can be used to collect donations for acts of kindness.

You can watch the RWI videos that are in your child’s reading folders, email me if you need the QR codes again. This will help them consolidate their sounds and then they can apply their knowledge when they are reading, you can play games like can you find any words with the ‘ay’ sound in your book etc. This extra reading will help them become speedy readers.
