“I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all my heart.” – Vincent van Gogh

The artists in year 2 have explored and experimented different ways of drawing texture using different media one of these was charcoal, messy but amazing results, the children loved it. Then we looked at how our facial expression shows how we feel the most important parts are you’re eyebrows and your mouth, having that in consideration we created our own emojis and there were some extraordinary expressions! Following this we have created our own book and made up our own story and characters, this was so fun and the artists/illustrators have created some beautiful books.

"Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” – Pablo Picasso

In year 6 this term we looked at Ancient Maya to modern-day street art, children look at how artists convey a message through art, we explored how imagery, symbols can be. we have learnt the technique ‘chiaroscuro’ and where is comes from (Italian - chiaro= light scuro=dark).

Artists considered audience and impact to create powerful drawings to make their voices heard and were commissioned(with sweets) by me tp create a piece of art work using all techniques learnt through out this module and to send a message to others of something that they’re passionate about.

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

Artists in year 3 were very busy and have leant so much about how artists see when they draw or paint-shapes. Everything around us is mainly made our of a shape or to be easier to put tin to paper they can use shapes. Year 3 looked at how we can create tone in drawings by shading and how we can hold our pencil in a different way from writing/detail (pencil grip)and how texture can be created and added to create art, we use the technique called frottage which is taking a rubbing from textured surfaces to form the basis of a work of art. The term frottage was created by the artist Max Ernst. We did botanical drawing and have explored different parts of flowers and did some closed up sketches, following this we created our own flower collage ( has Henry Matisse once said": “ drawing with scissors”) experimenting the difference between rip and tear in this artwork. We have inspired a lesson by Georgia O'Keeffe and did some abstract paintings of zoomed up flowers using watercolours and adding detail with fine liners, this was a very successful technique.

“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” – Leonardo da Vinci

Artists in year 1 this term , have been very busy learning about mark making and different types of lines and how to use them in their creations.

We experimented with a range of mark-making techniques, responding to music. We experimented different mediums and did observational drawing using all types of lines, starting black and white to a final piece in oil pastels, these were incredible successful.

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent Van Gogh

In year 4 the artists have learnt how to create a 3D drawing by adding tone, we explored proportion and tone when drawing. We did a “drawing with scissors” , by collaging random imagery into an abstract design, we then used that design on an abstract wax resist drawing, we coloured a pattern with wax crayons and painted over in black(paint + washing up liquid) after drying we scratched the paint creating contrast revealing the crayons from underneath. This was so much fun! We have then created amazing abstract prints on fabric.

Art is a line around your thoughts.” – Gustav Klimt

This term year 5, have being doing their DT unit (Mechanical systems) the have designed and created amazing pop up books, inspired in their history lesson and each have chosen their favorite ancient Greek for their books.

"There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people"- Vincent Van Gogh

Just like that a whole year of school as come to an end…

What a busy term we all had.

During this term we have started our Food Tech and we had a blast of smells and flavours in our art room and around school.

I think it is safe to say that we all had fun and although sometimes a little bit fearful of trying new flavours we all had a go and the results of our makings were super tasty.

Thank you to you all for supporting us and for your patient too, it is a learning curve for the children but for staff too.

Click on your chef’s year groups to see what they have been up to this term.

Have the most amazing summer and enjoy some family time in the sunshine.

" I don't say everything but i paint everything"- Pablo Picasso

In year 1 this term we have started our food tech. We looked at the difference of fruit and vegetables and we watch some fast growth videos of some vegetable and some fruits, from seeds to their ripe state, where we can then eat them.

The children were truly amazing to watach the video of a strawberry and a carrot.

We had a taster session of some fruit and vegetables and from that we made up some smoothies, some look rather green but we didn’t let that stop us and still had a try and it actually wasn’t that bad!

"Creativity is contagious, pass it on!" - Albert Einstein

In year 3, we started our food tech learning all about how eating seasonally can help our environment, we have looked at how different seasons affect the growth of different fruit and vegetables and looked at a world map where we could see where some come from.

We tried some Japanese grilled fruit kebabs with plum sauce, it was different but oh my it was tasty!

We had a chance to make fruit crumble and with this really look at the ingredients we were choosing, having in mind our country seasonal fruits when out shopping for ingredients. We then baked some tarts using seasonal vegetables this time, the art room as like a mini farmers market, it was lovely to see the children taking ownership and being independent with their designing and preparation. These tarts smelled amazing and were so easy and low cost to make!

"Creativity takes courage"- Henry Matisse

In year 2 this term we had food tech. Initially we looked at sugar hidden in drinks and foods and to always check our packages ingredients and try and spot those hidden sugars. We looked in particular at certain drinks that we are familiar with in pairs we worked out the sugar and as a class we used actual sugar to make it visual for us how much actual sugar was in the drinks we were shocked to find just how much sugar was in the orange juice, nearly 10gr of sugar!

We looked at the food wheel and how should our plate look like when we eat, fruit and vegetables being the biggest portion. With eating healthy in mind we all did a “blind” taster session and we soon found out our likes and dislikes, we this in mind children then designed their own healthy wrap. I think its safe to say that we all learnt a lot and had loads of fun designing, preparing and of course eating!

" The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance." - Aristotle

In year 6’s food tech we did our own version of “Come and Dine with me”.

Chefs entered a draw and we had two groups making Starters, Mains and desserts. In each session two judges were draw for a taster of the meals cooked and a score given to the team.

The chef’s had some key ingredients for their meals, peppers for starters, salmon for mains and pineapple for desserts. The chefs were encouraged to research online for recipes with thses ingredients. The results were amazing, everything looked delicious and smelled amazing.

Well done year 6 on completing the challenge.

"Don't wait for inspiration. It comes while working!"- Henry Matisse

In year 5 the food tech was all about eating healthy and make healthy choices when making and designing their own Bolognese.

I think it is fair to say that some Bolognese’s were unique and had some unusual ingredients but they smelled delicious.

I think the chef’s in year 5 have enjoyed their taster sessions, enjoyed their cooking as well as eating their Bolognese’s afterwards .

"Everything you can imagine is real!" - Pablo Picasso

In year 4 during our food tech it was all about making a basic recipe into our own, but trying to be aware of the costs too.

We designed our own biscuits boxes.

Tried a very basic biscuit recipe and then bake it with our own favourite add ingredients, chefs had to work in groups and then be mindful of each others likes and come to an agreement on what ingredients to use so everyone was happy with the end result. I think the chef’s did really well at problem solving and everyone was happy with their end results. I even had some biscuits coming my way that were tried an baked at home. Cooking is a life skill, keep practising and changing ingredients!

"I would advise young artists to paint as they can, as long as they can, without being afraid of painting badly." - Claude Monet

This term in year 4 the artists learnt about sculpture and the many ways you can do sculpture.

We learnt about Magdalena Odundo and tried to recreate some of the 2D shapes used in her sculpture to create vases, we used different colour soft pastels in black paper for contrast.

Year 4 artists also learnt about Barbara Hepworth a British artist and Sculptor, we had a go at sculpting soap bars , this was proven to be tricky but so much fun and the classroom smelt amazing for days!

Looking at sculpture and the ways it can be made we had a go at modelling wire to create our own sculpture, this has given the children a variety of mediums to explore sculpturing with. Many sculptures can be made from found objects and reused materials too.

“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” – Leonardo da Vinci

In year 2 this term was busy but very creative. The artists experimented mark making using charcoal, the children experimented how different ways of holding the charcoal can create different marks, charcoal is so messy but so much fun! We tried to create a texture from different objects in the classroom using a variety of mediums, the children were encouraged to touch and discuss what they could feel and how they would recreate that texture in their sketchbooks. Following this the artists brought their favourite toy and had a go at observational drawing, drawing only what they could see and trying to recreate the texture on paper, these were amazing! On our last week we looked at illustrations and how illustrators show their characters feelings. We looked at which parts of our face show our emotions. Eyebrows, eyes and mouth help us to understand how a character in a book or film is feeling, we had a go at creating our own feeling emoji, there were some very creative emojis!

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." - Vincent Van Gogh

What a busy term in year 3! In art we have travelled back in time and looked at prehistoric art, starting by learning how the pigments for painting came from. We looked at cave paintings and these were drawing with little detail. The artists were asked to draw common British animals in charcoal and later to enlarge them on to an A3 size using only cave painting colours, we knew that cave painting people only had natural resources and not a great variety of colours, we used a more earthy colour wheel.

The artists went on a hunt outdoors for natural resources and were able to experiment which would give a nice pigment when painting with. Year 3 had a go at making their own Prehistoric palette by mixing flour and water and by adding different condiments we obtained different colours, we used paprika, nutmeg, turmeric and cinnamon, some worked better than others but they all smelt amazing!

The children created their own cave wall to paint in, for this we used cardboard as a base, we glued sand, couscous and lentils and once dried we were able to add our favourtite British animal, we had so much fun doing this.

To end our term we did a virtual visit to the caves in France “Chauvet cave” and looked at the hand drawings and tried to recreate our own hand paintings , positive(paint on hand to print) and negative (hand on paper and paint around hand creating a negative hand print). This was very messy and children really enjoyed the process!

"The painter should not paint what he sees, but what will be seen." - Paul Klee

This term the artists in year 1 have explored mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and inspired by the artist Jasper Johns style we painted our own “0 through 9”: experimented Lego printing and discussed all the patterns that the Lego created and had a go at trying to print our names initial.

Year 1 have looked at how a colour can have so many different shades and had a go at creating different shades of green creating a hand using the shades obtained.

The artists got to know about Clarice Cliff and his circle tree ceramics and tried to create their own inspired by the artist way of painting.

To end our term we did paint by the sound of the music, I played a couple of tunes and asked the children to first dance how the music made them feel and then using their paint brushes as their ballerinas to recreate that feeling on paper and thinking carefully on the chosen colours for that same music and feeling, it was a the perfect lesson to end our term!

"Art is a harmony parallel with nature." - Paul Cezanne

This term the artists in Year 5, have been learning of portrait drawing, for this they have used mixed mediums and different techniques. They had a go at drawing King Charles III portrait ready for the coronation and these looked amazing!

We also had a visit of an artist and had a painting workshop “ Art without thought”, by Jack Crayton. Jack has told us about his journey in the army and how art has helped him in his life. Jack has taught us to draw/paint in perspective and the final masterpieces were amazing and in the end the children asked amazing questions and were so polite. On our final week we had a charcoal workshop too, the children were showed different techniques that could be use with charcoal, by drawing with the rubber and had lights to midtones and creating contrast , charcoal is a great and inexpensive medium to work with, although a little messy!

" Everything you can imagine is real." - Pablo Picasso

Together we found out all about sustainable art and how important it is for our planet and environment, we decided to upcycle everyday packages that would eventually go in the bin to each create a piece for a Christmas village, it was amazing to see the children’s ideas on their sketchbooks and there were so many great ideas!
