Year 6 Weekly Blog 'A person who never made a mistake, never tried anything new' Albert Einstein

This week we have listened to and reflected on Luke parable of the fig tree, which highlights God’s patience and the need for believers to produce good fruit. Year 6 have looked at how we can produce good fruit in our lives and what the symbolism means behind it. In liturgy we discussed how just like the fig tree needed a chance to bear fruit, we also need time to grow and become better christians.

Wow we have been a class full of Isabella Insects this week: listening to advice, celebrating the things we have achieved, looking forward to the things we want to develop next and most importantly not comparing ourselves to others. Such vital skills when we are teaching our children to be independent learners; giving them the confidence to take risks, try different skills and most importantly, be allowed to make those crucial mistakes and learn from them. We have had a week of feedback from our first practice SAT’s papers and next week we will continue with this journey. This is a huge learning curve for the children, and a crucial one, as it allows them to celebrate their achievements but also, to see for themselves the areas they need to work on. The first paper is never a full reflection of what your children are capable of, but we must celebrate them whatever mark they got as it is the first hurdle of a journey together. They now fully understand this process, as we have talked at length about how our feelings/ emotions can take control, preventing us to see or read questions carefully, the silly mistakes we make when we feel like we are being timed, the way the questions are worded and decoding ‘what does it want me to do?’ and then the strategies they can use to allow them to become more accurate or efficient. These are just SOME of the barriers, or as we would say, ‘learning opportunities’, that the children need to learn or overcome, before they even then, apply all of their knowledge.

I am so proud of the way Year 6 have approached this feedback. They have faced these sessions with such resilience, determination and maturity. This is why it is so crucial to do these papers at this time as they are ready and have the skills to face these challenges. The children have laughed and celebrated at their silly errors, know exactly where they have gone wrong, know what they need to work on and are, dare I say it, even excited to do it again and ‘beat’ their score. These papers will go home with the children next week to share with you. Take the time to go through these papers, to celebrate their achievements, let them explain their mistakes and what they should have done and let them share their targets with you.

What have we been learning this week?

Learning has been full on and fast paced this week. I am so impressed by the attitude of the children and their desire to make progress.

English - ThIs week our focus has been finishing off our learning around progressive tense. We are getting closer to the end of our class novel- The Boy at the Back of the Class, which the children are loving! Mrs Gregan has treated us to a book she found at the school fair- ‘The girl at the front of the class’ which we can’t wait to read after!

Maths - this week we have been adding and subtracting fractions!

PE- we have thoroughly enjoyed our PE this week. On Tuesday we have been putting together sequences on the large equipment in the hall and on Wednesday, we have been practising our forehand and backhand in tennis, seeing how long we can keep a ralley going!

You will see from the homework this week that we are really gearing up to the final weeks of teaching. Please continue to keep asking questions and I will help you wherever I can. Over Easter we will be sending a number of practice papers home to have a go at over the holidays, all of these will be due back the first day back after the Easter holidays. Support your child the best way you see fit, these will not be assessed by me, so whatever level input you feel is necessary then please feel free. If you click on the button below, it will take you to the section on the Year 6 web page ‘How to Help Your Child.’ I have updated the page with lots of useful sites for the children to access. If you see there is an area that children need more practice, then these sites should help, but remember one of the most crucial ways is through books. So please make sure you set aside time of Easter to read together. Below also is the timetable and just so information about SAT’s week.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all it's a time of grace' Pope Francis

We are now right at the beginning of Lent and Year 6 this week have spoken about in Liturgy what we must do to prepare for the death adn resurrection of Jesus, as we journey towards the cross. We have reflected on how we can build our relationship with God through many different ways such as prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We then made our own lenten promises, of what we will do during this time to become closer to God and added it to our Prayer and Liturgy display.

This run up to May is always a crucial one, where we can really refine the skills we need and reinforce any necessary information. So many of you have asked how you can help your child at home and what you can do to give them confidence in the final few weeks. Staying calm and not putting unnecessary pressure on children will ensure that they remain confident and continue to have that ‘I can’ attitude; early nights will be crucial over the next few weeks as they will be tired from all of their hard work and of course keep talking to them about their success but also areas to improve, helping them to set a plan of what they can do to reach their targets. One HUGE way to support your child, is homework. Every week, I spend time organising and planning for the areas that Year 6 need the most, complimenting what we are doing in class. Having a parent work alongside them to do this homework WILL help them. Reading is the other area, reading alongside your child every night- modelling fluency and pace, modelling reading punctuation and asking them questions about what they have read will also have a great impact.

What have we been learning this week?

English - This week we have looked in to the fight scene of Mercuito and Tybalt, as well as continuing to revise the tense rules for simple, perfect and progressive tense, as well as working on the active and passive voice. Yesterday, we reflected closely on Juliet’s response to hearing the news and looked at her confusion and confliction as we gather oxymorons and even made our own!

Maths - We have continued to master our fraction work, solving problems, converting mixed and improper fractions, comparing and ordering and of course consolidating our arithmetic.

French- This week we have started looking at items around the home in french.

PE- This week we have been working on our racket control and rallying skills in tennis…

Leading Learners

Well done to Cora this week.

Cora, you have been so resilient in your learning and this week we can see how your hard work is paying off! You have persevered with that deep maths learning of new methods, you are retrieving your grammar much more with ease and you have been so determined to complete all your work independently. Your fraction work this week has clicked in to place and you are whizzing through it, as you have such a sound recall of your times tables. We are so proud of your ‘I CAN’ attitude, enthusiasm and determination!

Turning to the Cross

This week, we celebrated the start of Lent at mass as a whole school. This was such a beautiful time, of deep prayer and reflection, it is an invitation to rearrange your priorities—to focus on what matters most and leave behind what matters least.

We have now exchanged our Lenten boxes with Reception, ready to collect money for Cafod during Lent. It was so clear how much effort all the children had put in to when creating their boxes and they loved getting together again to give it to their partner.

You are never alone when you are lost in a book…

We love World Book Day! Yesterday brought such happiness, laughter and excitement to the classroom. I hope you enjoy looking at the photographs from yesterday! We started the day off with the live ‘Great Big World Book Day Footy & Booky Quiz 2025!’ led by the football premier league, which was all about books and of course football! Then we swapped our books with one another and then spent some time reading with our reception partners. The rest of the day was dedicated to our class novel ‘The boy at the back of the class’ where we collected vocabulary and wrote a description piece of a market place!

Where has our learning taken us this week?

Maths - We have continued with our long division practice and consolidation, but we are doing really well- we even have some to practise for homework! We have got ur fraction work up and running- simplifying fractions, comparing fractions and now changing improper and mixed fractions! In English, we have studied the balcony scene in more detaled and written our independent diaries as Romeo- I can’t wait to read them!

We had a fabulous mroning at forest school! We have had mud kitchens, den building and tree climbing- think the picutres say it all …

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'When we give cheerful and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.'

Welcome back to the second half of the spring term. There is no doubt that it is going to be a busy term with lots and lots going on. I am really excited that we will end the term with an Easter assembly. It will be a lovely way to bring our class family: parents and children together.

This half term, we are focusing on the virtues of being Grateful and Generous. This half term we will be growing to be grateful for our own gifts, for the gift of other people, and for the blessings of each day; and generous with our own gifts and the service for others. There is so much love in our school and especially our class and I am so grateful for all of your wonderful children, how hard they are all working and of course all the support from you as parents. Keep supporting them at home with their daily reading, completion of homework and of course attendance, it is such a crucial time, that we can not miss any learning opportunity!

‘Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo.’ Drama is a brilliant way to bring text to life and we will be using drama throughout this entire unit. Before half term we filmed and photographed the prologue to Romeo and Juliet. Please enjoy our film below.

Where has our learning taken us this week?

Maths - We have continued with our long division practice and consolidation- this will be ongoing now, so please do not worry if we are not 100% confident with this just YET- we WILL get there, we just have to be Sadie Spiders! Fractions will be a big part of next week’s learning, so please make sure you spend time on the homework, recapping finding fractions of numbers from year 5 in preparation! This week the children have recieved feedback on their wonderful diary entries, in the role of Juliet and had a chance to improve and edit their work, ready to complete their next diary entry as Romeo next week!

On Wednesday, the children had a visit from St Anne’s firefighters, to revisit fire safety from their Year 2 learning but also to talk about Road Safety. We learnt some great ways of how to keep ourselves safe…

Being an active and curious learner.

I am sure the children have come home to tell you that they have had their grammar paper back this week. This was such an exciting and worth-while learning journey, where we have been through the paper, celebrated achievements and even mistakes- as the mistakes we make are what we truly learn from the most! I would like to remind all of you that this process is not to label or to level your child, as we have not yet completed the whole curriculum, we simply do this to ensure your children are familiar with the layout, formatting, style of questions and of course to learn what is expected of them. The children have had the chance to think about what areas they know they need to work on now and reflect on what progress they would like to make next time- marginal gains are always the best way! We were so proud of the children’s maturity and resilience during this feedback time.

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'Don't be afraid to take on the biggest of challenges, they offer the greatest reward.'

Yesterday we celebrated the Jubilee year as a community at church. This was a beautiful way to mark this special year and look at ways we can all be pilgrims of hope. Father Peter, talked us through the beautiful meaning behind the logo. We looked at the four figures, representing all of humanity, coming from the four corners of the earth. They embrace each other to indicate the solidarity which should unite all peoples. The figure at the front is holding onto the cross. It is not only the sign of the faith, but also of hope, which can never be abandoned, because we are always in need of hope, especially in our moments of greatest need. There are the rough waves under the figures, symbolising the fact that life’s pilgrimage does not always go smoothly in calm waters. Often the circumstances of daily life and events in the wider world require a greater call to hope, but God’s love for us will always give us the anchor that we need. We then talked about all the ways that we can be pilgrims of hope, whether this be through prayer, going to church, kindness or spreading our love.

We have reached the end of a very busy and full half term. I know I say this most weeks, but I really am in awe of the work that the children are completing and the expectations that they have of themselves. Whether it be Science, Maths, RE or Art, the children always get fully stuck into their learning and become immersed by what they are being taught. I am so very proud of them all.

Online Safety

In the midst of our busy week, we devoted a large amount of conversation time to online safety. Tuesday was National Online Safety Day and we took part in the BBC live lesson on online safety. On this day, children from all over the country will have been looking carefully at their online behaviour; hopefully they will have learnt a thing or two. We looked at what scams and phishing are, and ways that we can spot them! We have also looked at social media platforms, there age restrictions and how the internet can influence our behaviour, thoughts and feelings, both negatively and positively. We have had some extremely interesting and open conversations around these topics!

Where has our learning taken us this week?

English - ‘Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo.’ This week we have explored Romeo and Juliet’s first encounter and written a recount in role- very romantic! In Maths we have been focusing on our long multiplication and using this to problem solve, then we have started with our long division practice- this will be ongoing now, so please do not worry if we are not 100% confident with this just YET- we WILL get there, we just have to be Sadie Spiders! In RE we have learnt what happens during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, in particular how we are offering our lives to God during the offertory.

This week we have filmed our version of the prologue for Romeo and Juliet- this will be ready to put on the blog first week back, but here is a sneak preview of our the play in 30 seconds and a few photos of our drama in the hall…

Being an active and curious learner.

I am sure the children have come home to tell you that this week we sat our first mock SAT’S papers. They have completed these with great resilience and such a positive attitude. This has not been completely new for your children, they have regularly had a go at example questions, however this is the first time they have completed a whole paper. After half term, we will continue to complete the Maths and Reading, but they all understand the importance of this and I am sure lots of lessons will be learnt which will enable us to build and move forward together as a class. Once they have completed these assessment, they will of course be marked and handed back to them where they will be encouraged to think about their progress and where they want to be next time they take a set of papers. Marginal gains is what it is all about. Over the next few weeks, the children will be bringing folders home, with their papers in them. This is their opportunity to share their work with you, to purple pen, celebrate their successes and reflect on their mistakes. At this point, it is really important to remember that the Year 6 curriculum has not been fully covered yet and we still have plenty of time. Please celebrate your child’s achievements and help them to develop their own targets. You may also find, over the next few weeks, past papers or SAT examples may come home as part of their homework. This can be completed the best way you see fit- whether this is alongside your child, independently or even, if they independently start and then go over their answers after. Homework is not always about assessing your child, this is done in class, homework is all about consolidating what they have learnt in class, revising and practicing skills they will need, so this may not always be formally marked, but what they have gained from carrying out these practice papers will have helped them greatly.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 7.02.25 - 'For never was there a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.'

This week in our RE our focus has been on the liturgy of the word during mass and the significance of this on how Jesus is present through his words, looking closely at what messages he is trying to convey to us. We have deeply reflected on how, through the bible, God is speaking directly to us, telling us how much he loves us and how he wants us to live. This has fit beautifully with this week’s gospel we have read in class, which described how Simon Peter, James and John were compelled to follow Jesus after witnessing a miraculous catching of fish. During the Liturgy of the word, we too can reflect how we can become followers of Jesus and be fishers of mean, spreading God’s love.

I don’t think anybody can say that the Year 6 classroom is not a varied one! From performing Romeo and Juliet, writing footballer profiles in french to tackling long multiplication in Maths, we have certainly had a full and diverse week of learning. Older literature is our focus now, in particular Romeo and Juliet. This week we looked at three different interpretations of this play and we have mapped out the whole plot, summarizing each main event. I will be using the 1996 film occasionally throughout the teaching sequence. This film is a certificate 12, but I can assure you that all of the content that the children will be shown will be suitable and appropriate. Year 6 loved reading and analysing scene 1, collecting all of the Shakespearean insults, making up our own using collected nouns and adjectives and then using them in our drama later that day …

This week the children have attemped grammar and arithmetic SAT’s whole papers. The children have of course have attempted example questions since September, but this is the first time they have seen them as a whole paper. This is not a benchmark for their learning, and their score is not relevant at this time, as we have not yet covered the whole Year 6 curriculum. This was simply to give the children an insight as to what the papers look like, the style of questionning, to come across misconceptions sooner, rather than later, giving the children the time and space to reflect and evaluate in a safe space. They will be getting a bit of feedback on these next week, but please do not at this point focus on scores, instead please ask that important question … what did you learn? We have to teach the children to see beyond the immediate scores and instead see this as a process, a journey of self-reflection and learning.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 31.01.25 'The one who has hope lives differently; the one who has hope has been granted the gift of a new life'

This week our liturgies have been centred around the Jubilee year- the year of hope. We have now launched this across the school, this is a landmark moment in the life of the global church. We, as a school community, are invited to join together as pilgrims of hope, pledging to work together for God’s kingdom of justice, peace and love. This week, we have created our Holy door leading to our classroom, welcoming hope for ourselves and others every time we enter…

Where has our learning taken us this week?

We have had another great week in Year 6, with lots of hard work, resilience and of course laughter! In English we have been practising using our active and passive voice, use of semi-colons, reading skills and have kicked off our topic on Romeo and Juliet. In maths, we have been scaling up and down, using our knoweldge oif number to problem solve, finding factors of numbers and missing numbers in calculations- all in preparation for next week where we will start our long division learning- children need to be able to retrieve their mulitplication facts quickly to be successful in this area, so please keep working with your children at home, if you feel like they need some extra practise! In French this week, we have been translating football vocabuary, in Music we have been harmonising and using notation and in Science we have conducted an experiement, testing the hypothesis: Do fizzy drinks contain more sugar than fruit juices?

Year 6 Weekly Blog 26.01.24 'To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try' Rosa Parks

It has been such a reflective week in Year 6. In our RE and liturgy we delved a little deeper in to the scripture ‘I am the bread of life’, at how we can nourish ourselves spirituality as well as physically through our daily interactions with others, as well as prayer and different ways we can connect or talk to God. Earlier in the week we reflected on the gospel and what it means to follow God. We have also kicked started the Jubilee in assembly, where we are joining together as a global family for the year of Hope.

Where has our learning taken us this week?

We have had a lovely week in class. Full of hard work, enthusiasm and deep reflection- and we even managed to watch the Dr Who episode where the doctor met Rosa Parks, which was such a great tool to use before we wrote our wonderful Biographies. The children were so gripped and great conversations led on from this about the injustice of the time. This week the children have finished their Outcome 2 biographies on Rosa Parks. We have done so mcuh work leading up to this, gathering vocabulary, cohesive devices and practising our use of semi colons, the children had such a wealth of knowledge and tools and could write with great confidence. I am looking forward to marking them over the weekend- they are so proud of their work!

On Monday we had a wonderful visit from Rachel from ‘Faith Friends’, to help us to learn more about Judaism. The children showed such curisity and loved hearing about an alternative faith. They had so many great questions and we can’t wait to hear more about the celebrations and fesitivals on our next visit in summer…

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst' (John 6:35)

This week in RE and litrugy we have been reflecting on Jesus’ teachings on spiritual nourshment. God wanted us to understand that as well as satidfying our physical hunger we also need to build our relationship with God, satisfying our spiritual nourishment for our souls ansd for our inner selves to grow strong. We talked about all the ways we can grow our spirituality and how this develops our faith and hope, which has enhanced our virtues Faithfilled and Hopeful even further. Earlier this week we shared a liturgy where we looked at these virtues and how we can use them in our lives, the children were then asked to write a prayer on these to add to our ‘hope’ display in the classroom.

Where has our learning taken us this week?

Wow the learning in Year 6 has really started to pick up pace and Year 6 are rising to all of the challenges- we are all so proud of them. We are managing to fit in so much learning and they are even becoming much more organised in the mornings, getting all of their equipment and books ready for the lessons ahead.

  • English - This week we have been working hard on our biography work, writing a paragraph each day on our Henry VIII biography and practicing using semi-colons and our relative clauses, using them as embedded clauses and at the end of our sentences. Next week we will be writing our own biographies on Rosa Parks, we were hoping to watch the Dr Who eposide to help us undertsand her struggles, please let me know via email if this is not something you want your children to see.

  • Maths - This week we have been looking at multiples to 100,000, finding midpoints on scales and estimating.

  • Science- This week we have been continuing our learning in to the human body. We have been learning about the function of the heart and what it looks like. The children listen to three different heart rates this week and replicated this with musical instruments.

Leading Learners

Well done to ARTHUR this week.

Arthur, thank you for reflecting so deeply on your learning this week, ensuring you apply what you have learnt to all areas and striving to be the best you can. You have listened to advice and are working hard across all areas, focusing on your learning and ensuring this is reflected in your written work. We can see you know exactly the areas that you are determined to improve and this week you have been actively challenging yourself to improve well done Arthur!

  • Please do continue to keep up to date with your child’s homework (particularly spelling). The vocabulary that the children are being asked to spell are getting more complex and they will need your support to figure out the best strategy to use. Learning them over time, rather than bulking them the night before, always seems like the best route to use.

  • Just a reminder that lip balms or any type of creams, are classed as a type of medication and therefore (if needed) need to be handed in to the teacher- thank you for your support.

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'The best is yet to come. The start of a New Year is the chance to rewrite your book.'

Welcome back…

Wishing you all a very happy new year. It has been so lovely to welcome the children back to school this week, despite the bitter cold. The most important part of any school is the people within it. We have loved seeing the smiles and listening to all of the wonderful stories that the festive season has brought. On Monday we celebrated as a whole school the feast of the Epiphany in liturgy. It was an opportunity for the children to spend a few minutes reflecting on what a miracle the baby Jesus was.

The children have been thinking about what 2025 might look like for them. The children have all reflected on their year ahead and thought about their new year’s resolutions- what do they want to improve this year and what are they going to do to achieve this. They are all going to come across some monumental experiences and opportunities this year. Some of them will be challenging, some will be exciting, some they will be anxious about. Whatever happens, they know they have the skills to tackle it with great resilience and determination. I have to say, they have all come back to school extremely well rested and ready to take on all the challenges they come across in their learning- I am so proud of them this week, they have worked so hard!

This half term, we are looking at what it means to be faithfilled and hopeful. Both of these qualities will be really important as we journey towards half term, having faith in oursleves, others and most importantly God. With faith and love, comes hope, hope that we can achieve the things we want to and hope in others.

This week we have done lots of work on multiples to 100,000, as well as working on the accuracy of our arithmetic work. Our focus in English has been on gathering content and analysing biographies, adding vocabulary and it’s features to our working wall. Next week, we will spend each day writing a paragraph on our class biography of Henry VIII, I can’t wait to see how they put everything they have learnt in to practice. This week in indoor PE we have been practicing and developing our athletics events and trying to beat our personal best in speed bounce, standing long jump and triple jump.

Leading Learners

Well done to Pippa.

Pippa, you work tirelessly in lessons to be the best you can be and I love teaching you as you are always so focused and engaged, with your great attention, you have the ability to think deeply about subjects, taking your learning that step further! Your thirst for learning is contagious and how you strive to challenge yourself in your work is wonderful- keep this up Pippa!

Year 6 Weekly Blog- 'Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day'

As we move towards the third week of advent, it seems unbelievable that we have nearly completed our first full term together in Year 6. As I reflect on how much the children have grown, learnt and enjoyed every experience in Year 6, it seems only fitting that the third candle of advent represents JOY. It reflects the joy that comes through Jesus’ arrival, and through the salvation he has gifted us and as we continue to approach Christmas Day, our joy grows more and more. We had such a beautful time with our Reception buddies at mass on Thursday, celebrating advent.

Thank you to the following children for such a beautiful liturgy on ‘peace’.

This week we have had a wonderful week of learning and practice for our Chrsitmas concert next week. The children are speaking out beautifully in church and singing their hearts out- we can’t wait for you to see it.

This week we have started to look at biographies in English and pull out its features. We have collected biographical language, looked up any unfamiliar words and looked at the importance of using choronogy. In computing we have been looking at networks and looking at how we use the internet. In Science, we have been looking at the circulatory system and the main components that move the blood around the body. We even worked in groups to create a circuit to show this. Here is just a snapshot of our week…

What a fantastic (extra) art lesson we had with Mrs Mather this week. Our stables are starting to take shape and look truly beautiful, the other classes are going to LOVE their new stables!

Christmas Bake Off…

Wow what an amazing selection of cakes, brownies and cookies! So much effort has gone in to each and every one of them and they look FABULOUS, never mind taste FABULOUS!! Thank you to all the effort you have gone to, to make our ‘Bake Off’ extra special! The judges found it incredibly hard to decide on the winner, look how tasty they all look …

Well done to our ‘Bake off’ winner! A BLUE velvet cake, with delicious Lindt chocolates to top it off- yummy!

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'During this Advent season, I will keep alert and awake, listening for you.'

The second candle of advent represents Peace. This week our liturgy was centred around Peace, looking at what Peace looks like, how at times we can face storms in our lives but most importantly we can find peace in our lives, and look to God for our own inner peace. It was a beaitful reflection, where each child had a mission going forward of how they can be peacemakers, and they wrote examples on Angel wings which has been displayed in our class prayer corner. Many thanks to Mrs Webster’s artisitc skills …

Thank you also to our wonderful class members, who delivered a beautiful child-led liturgy on Forgiveness …

This week I feel we have well and truly started our nativity journey. On Tuesday, we were blessed to watch our youngest children perform on stage so beautifully- telling the story through song and movement, reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas. Then on Wednesday, the whole of Key Stage 2 ventured down to church to begin our concert rehearsal. As I sat there listening to the children sing their hearts out and say their lines with such confidence, I could not help but smile. Thank you to those that have practised their songs and words so well! Next week, we will be doing our final practises on Monday and Wednesday, so please can we make sure children know their words by then.

We have also met with our Reception buddies this week, where half the class took their partners around the school for the prayer pilgrimage, following a prayer map. The children went to each station, where they focused on each stations key message during advent. It was a beaitful and reflective afternoon, where the children got to listen to prayer and scripture…

Where has our learning taken us this week?

We have had a lovely week in class. Full of hard work, enthusiasm, laughs - We have completed all the work on our class novel, we can now just sit back, listen and enjoy hearing how the story unfolds- it has been very dramatic! A few gasps were heard in the classroom, as we are learning just what an evil character Vindictus Sharpe really is! This week the children have written their own flashback stories- I can’t wait to read them all! We have been coding in computing, listening to WW2 songs in music and much, much more!

Year 6 Weekly Blog -”The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” — Alan Watts.

This week’s liturgy and reflection has been focused around the word ‘Glory’. We reflected on this week’s gospel, where we hear Jesus tell us about the parable of the fig tree. A symbol that as soon as its twigs start to grow and leaves appear, we know that Spring is on its way. We then discussed other ways we know that something is going to happen, and how we know change is about to happen. The children of course discussed how we are about to enter advent, the time when we prepare for the birth of Jesus, and we reflected on how we can prepare our hearts for this time.

Thank you to this week’s group for their beatiful liturgy on patience, they led us in reverent prayer and reflection ….

This week we have fit so much high quality learning in to our timetable. This is all down to your wonderful children, how hard they are working and how eager they are to deepen their knowledge and learn new skills! We have even got a small group of children making extra notes in journals and going away to re-learn and practice skills- how mature! This week we have continued with our adjusting method in maths, we have learn all about the function of blood and what it is made up from in Science, learn to translate french opinions in french, reflected on the portaits of Elizabeth I and the key messages she wanted to deliver and so much more …

It was lovely to see so many of you there for the Year 6 book look. This is such a special time for both the children and adults, a time to reall celebrate the progress, effort and time they have spent on their work. They really take great pride in their work and are reaching our high expectations in Year 6, so it is so wonderful that we get to share this with you- I am sure you were all very impressed…

Wow, playtimes are so much fun. Here are just some of the games they have been playing at break times this week …

We have loved spending all day today in our PJ’s, thank you for all of your donations to raise money for Brian House!

My Happy Mind this week’s focus was on celebrate! We looked at how everyone possesses 24 character strengths, but we all have different amounts of each of them and that’s what makes us unique! The children all thought about what they felt were their top 5 character strengths and then we took a survey to see what the professionals thought! We then compared them to see if we were right- it was fascinating but I think we know ourselves pretty well! Here are our top 3 character strengths no mug shots (promise) …

Year 6 Weekly Blog: “Lest We Forget"

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them… this week is always a poignant week as we stop and remember all of those fallen victims of war and conflict. Our focus of the week has been on the word ‘Remembrance’. We have designed and created our own poppies and yesterday we reflected on previous wars and wrote poetry in response.

“Christ has no body on earth now but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on the world; yours are the feet with which he walks to do good; yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world” St Teresa of Avila.

In worship this week, we have reflected on this quote and how it relates to our two virtues: Intentional and Prophetic. We have spoken about what these virtues mean and how we can be intentional in the choices we make and the ethical code we live by, choosing to live how God wants us to…

The week has flown by and we have done so much exciting and challenging learning. We have read more of our class novel this week, looked at the remaining Tudor Monarchs after Henry VIII and started our Geography unit on volcanoes and mountains with Mrs Hotchkiss.

Our Mathematics this week has been on fire, balancing equations and using redistribution to find unknowns in expressions!Very impressive!

Travelling Nativity

Our Travelling Nativity has started it journey visiting your homes. It is yours to keep for one night only (unless you get it on a Friday) and then you must return it to Year 6. Please make sure that it is completely ready for another friend to enjoy the next day.

If you would like to share this moment through a picutre, then please feeel free to take a picture and email it to me. Enjoy celebrating the birth of Christ at home with one another, it is such a special time.

Where does the light come from in your life? - Castlerigg Day 2

This has been a key message for us today at Castlerigg - Where does the light come from in your life? Yesterday was all about how we shine our light and today, reflecting on others and what we are grateful for in our lives.

Before bed last night, we had the most incredibly experience - night time prayer. The chapel here at Castlerigg is the old stable building, which is perfect as we prepare for the arrival of Jesus this Christmas. Daisy, the youth worker here, took us through a section of prayer and used the story of Narnia to illustrate it. Here she compared the character of Aslan to Jesus Christ, who too sacrificed himself for the good of his friends. It was incredibly moving and it took me a while to recover after; as you can tell from the images below. We then snuggled up and listened to a bedtime story from Lily. A rather lovely end to our first day.

This afternoon we headed off to the lake for some much needed reflection and fresh air. The children found out about places of interest in Keswick, headed to Derwent Water to skim stones then wandered to Fitz Park for some time together. It was so lovely to take in the views of the lake and spend some time in God’s world. The children were great.

After a delicious tea of pizza, wedges, salad and fruit, we are now getting ready to settle down for mass in the chapel. The children have written bidding prayers and are ready to sing.

Enjoy your night and we will see you tomorrow. We are departing at 2pm so should be back at school for 4pm - we will keep you posted!
