It’s been another busy and exciting week in Reception which seems to have gone so quickly!
This week it has been lovely welcoming grown ups and family members into the classroom for our first Stay and Play session of this school year. The children were so proud to show you around our classroom and to share their learning with you. We hope you enjoyed it too.
We have also been busy preparing for our nativity - I’m sure many of you have been hearing snippets of the songs at home! Alongside lots of lovely songs and hymns, some children also have some words to say. These have been sent home in their reading packets, it would be great if you could also have a practise these at home. We have had lots of fun trying on our costumes this week (which we provide in school) and the children are really looking forward to sharing the story of the birth of Jesus with you all!
What have we been learning this week…
Phonics: This week we have learnt to read and write the sounds r, j and v. and thought of words for Fred’s book that begin with these sounds. All of our hard word and practise is really starting to show now as we are becoming speedier at recognising the sounds and are blending CVC words with increasing confidence. It really is such an exciting time when we are learning to read and the children’s faces light up when they realise what they can achieve. Thank you for your continued support with sound practise and reading books at home.
Understanding the world: We are enjoying exploring ‘Our Wonderful World’ and are beginning to think about the differences between countries e.g. weather, languages and cultures and traditions. We have been busy labelling our earth with the key vocabulary words that we have been discussing.
Travelling Nativity
Christmas is such a magical time of year and across school we take this time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. Over the next few weeks, each child will bring home the travelling nativity. In this bag, you will find a story book, wooden nativity figures, candle (battery operated) and a camera. The items can be used at home to re-tell the story of the nativity and the camera can be used to take any pictures or videos that you would like to share in school.
The children have really been enjoying this and always look forward to finding out who will get to take it next. Thank you for sharing this at home and for all of the pictures, we have loved looking at these in class.
(Please do make sure all of the items are returned to the bag. The bag must be sent back into school the following day ready for the next child to take home.)

Let’s Celebrate…
Each week children across the school are celebrated for demonstrating our learning characters and our school virtues. They are celebrated in class and in our Friday assemblies.
Enthusiastic Bobby Bee: Sophia!
Sophia, you have been so enthusiastic in Phonics and we can see just how much you are enjoying learning how to read and write! It’s lovely to see how excited you are when you notice how much you are growing your brain and how you like to build on this learning by challenging yourself to write lists and stories. You should be feeling really proud of yourself Sophia, we are really proud of you too!

Brave Tommy Turtle: Kian!
Kian, it has made us so proud to see you becoming a brave learner. You have grown in confidence over the last few weeks – especially with your reading and writing in phonics – and it is wonderful to see your face light up when you realise that you can do anything you put your mind to when you are brave and ‘have a go’ like Tommy Turtle! Kian you have such an exciting journey ahead and you should be feeling very proud. Keep being brave and remember that you are brilliant.

Important reminders:
Each child has a letter from the Reception vision screening that took place this week. This can be found in your child’s reading packet.
Please could the phonics sound key chains be sent into school in children’s reading packets on Monday. As the children have learnt more sounds over the past few weeks, we would like to add these sounds to the key chains so you can continue to practise them at home.
