Year 6 Weekly Blog 'Happiness in the highest form of health' Dalai Lama

Our two new virtues for this half term are Grafeful and Generous, and this week has been all about Year 6 being generous with their time and serving their school. This week was the first week of jobs and the teachers could not stop telling me how helpful, kind and enthusiastic all of their helpers were this week, so well done Year 6 on your first week working in classes. In liturgym we reflected on the word growth and how God’s power to nurture and transform lives encourages us to trust and follow Him. We read the parable of the mustard seed and discussed how faith starts small and then grows in to something beautiful and powerful. I asked them to think of something in their life that started small and has the potential to grow, and they shared how they started of small in Reception, they have been nurtred and now they have grown and are coming to the end of their year 6 journey and leading the school!

This week during our Health and Happiness week, it has been all about the importance of keeping our bodies and minds healthy. Of course Sports days commenced this week! Each child showed great resilience, determination and skill. Well done to Plessington who won Year 5/6- but we will have to wait until next week to find out the overall winner!

Groups of children are helping out at each afternoon, so far we have done Year 3/4 last Wednesday and look forward to Year nursery and reception on Tuesday and then year 1/2 on Wednesday. I have to say, we are quite disappointed we won’t have the year 6’s to help us out as the teachers in Year 3 and 4 have been singing their praises, saying they couldn’t have done it without them. What wonderful role models you are being Year 6, thank you- this is when we see this term of ‘service’ really come to life.

We had a wonderful yoga session on Thursday delivered by the Yogi Group Ltd. All the children really embraced this, and we talked about how we can use the breathing techniques or even the poses to help keep our mind and body healthy! We were really impressed with their balance!

The suspense for some of waiting to go in the hall is unbearable, but their time will come- this is what it is all about … the fun of waiting for something amazing to all come together! What a lovely, varied week we have had in Year 6, and although the learning continues, we are putting all of our skills to good use in many different ways.

Borwick Hall now seems a distant memory, yet the stories, tales and memories still live on. There have been many conversations centred around our holiday!

This week we have had a very special visit from Mrs Ball, St Bede’s lay chaplin, Miss Rodgers and our lovely past pupils Jack and Jess. Year 6 definitely gave the best first impressions, as they listened all about what to expect at High School, taking in all of the information and asking vital questions. There was a real buzz of excitement as they started to thinking about their next chapter.

‘The Greatest Show’ is in full swing now,we have now choreographed the opening song, which is a huge win as we have hardly had chance to get in the hall! They are approaching rehearsals with great enthusiasm and determination. We now, just need to make sure that all the children know their lines by heart, as it makes rehearsals much quicker and smoother, and I am very aware of time. Please this weekend encourage the children where possible to practice their lines and songs ready for next week. I know some of you have been asking about costumes …next week we will be putting a list together of the costumes we have already got in our drama cupboard, what we need to buy and if there is anything particular we need your child to have we will let you know by the end of next week.

Learning is continuing at the same pace in class during rehearsal time and we have been so impressed with the children’s independence, focus and presentation of their work. This week a lot of their work has been centred around our class novel Skellig. We have also started our History local study of Blackpool, coastlines in Geography and all about Buddism.

Delving deeper through talk …

What are we most grateful for?

Well done to Owen and Harvey

Well done Owen- you have a wonderful attitude towards your learning. You are focused and interested in all that you do. You approach all tasks -whether they be independent or not- with the same enthusiasm and good humour.

Wow Harvey what a week you have had! you have come back to school with such a positive attitude! You have been brave and dealt with our unstructured busy schedule like the mature young man you are beginning to be. We have been so impressed with your independence and determination.

Role Model of the week … Molly-Ann

Grateful and Generous butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are grateful for their own gifts, the gifts of others and the blessings of each day. We will also be spotting children who are generous, who use their gifts to help others. These children are the role models of the school. This week we thank Rosa for always being generous with her own gifts to help others.

This week we have the following children helping to take the younger children to their class:

Harvey Rosa Nicola Edi

Important Notices:

  • Jim Jam jog is next Monday at 8am- please bring your sponsor forms. This year we wanted to help another cause. It is very important that our children are aware of their community and causes that are close to them and us. There have been a number of significant events that have really made us stop this year and reflect. We hope that this summer, we can raise money for them both.

On 15th September 2023, we lost a very dear former pupil of ours, Harrison Bretheron. In a couple of week’s time, the family and friends of Harrison will be running his 22nd mile. Harrison never made it to 22 years of age; this is their tribute to him. All money raised from the run will be donated between Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and The Firefighter’s Charity; both of which have supported many of our current and former families. So far, they have raised over £15,000 - it is remarkable. We want to do our bit as well. Please support this event as much as you can - get your pjs ready!

We will be hosting a second charity towards the end of the year which our Year 5 children will tell us all about in a few week’s time.

  • St Bede’s induction day is on Wednesday 3rd July- details of this will be given nearer the time.

  • LSA: Thursday 11th July - Year 6 Parents Information Evening (parent invite only) and Friday 12th July - Year 6 Moving Up Day

  • Our School Play is on at 9:30am and 6pm on Monday 15th July and Tuesday 16th July.

Finally, have a fabulous weekend and we will see you all bright and early on Monday morning!
