It has been wonderful to start our new reading topic in English. One of our main focuses this week has been to make predictions. We have been finding evidence to support our predictions by looking purely at the illustrations.

Please have a go at using this week strategy to answer the following sums:
85 + 30 = 79 + 50 = 62 + 50 =
71 + 40 = 88 + 40 = 50 + 62 =
Did you notice anything about a couple of these sums?
Below are a few examples from this weeks work to help you…
Geography
Children, your challenge is to create a non-chronological report on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. You can present your non-chronological report however you choose e.g. in their homework book, on Purple Mash, on a larger piece of paper etc. The more creative the better! Your report should be well structured with an engaging title, subheadings, photos/drawings and bursting with information that makes the reader want to keep reading…not to forget geographical vocabulary! For those children who want to really challenge their brains, can you also include a rhetorical question and conjunctions (when, if, because, although, while, since, until, before, after, so)?
Below are some resources to get you started. Parents, this event was of course devastating and I’m aware that there are photos on the internet that the children may find unsettling. I kindly ask that you monitor their research. Thank you!
You have got two weeks to complete this challenge (23.3.23) and really give it your everything!

We have had a fabulous week celebrating World Book day. On the day itself, the children’s outfits were so creative and it was clear a huge amount of effort had been put in. The smiles on the children’s faces when they saw each other were priceless.

TT Rockstars
We ask that you continue to practise your times tables by spending time each day on TT Rockstars. Each week we reflect on how we are all getting on. This week our top TT Rockers are Louis, Teddy, Charlotte and John-Paul who have averaged over 5 minutes each day. Well done!
Computing
We have continued to practise our touch typing skills. I have re set the task that we were working on together on Wednesday. It needs perseverance and concentration.
Task title: Homework: Home, top and bottom row keys
English - Optional homework
Following our week of celebrating World book day/week in our case. Year 3 have expressed a desire to write (or possibly just illustrate like the original book) a spin off book from the original book, ‘Journey’. They would need to create a story all about the little boy that we met at the end of the book. This boy had a special purple pencil… I wonder what adventure he had been on before meeting ‘Sophie’.
You could complete this using paper and pencils, your homework book, or I have set a 2Do on purple mash if you would prefer to use the computer to create your story.
Year 3 weekly blog 24.2.23 - "LENT: Prayer, Fasting, Penance, Sacrifice, Reconciliation, Almsgiving."
It was lovely to welcome the children back after their half term break, it certainly sounded as though lots of fantastic memories were created! We have jumped back into our electricity learning, and have been exploring more about how to make circuits using a power source and a range of components. It has been great to see the teamwork and perseverance as they have worked with determination to get each circuit to work.
We have also been putting our drama skills to the test as we have deepened our understanding of the difference between an accident and doing things deliberately. We learnt that doing things deliberately to hurt another person, doing things which God do not want us to do, is called a sin. The children worked in small groups to create a piece of drama which included either an accident or a sin, and the audience had to decide on which the group had demonstrated.
In maths this week we have been busy using our knowledge of multiples of 10 to reason and solve word problems. Again, we have been so impressed with the children confidence in explaining their reasoning! Mrs Hotchkiss has been in and out, quizzing us on our timetables, she is very impressed children, keep practising and spending time on TT Rockstars to keep this confidence growing.
On Wednesday we celebrated mass in school with Father Peter. We sang together and listened to a lovely piece of scripture read by our Head Girl. Following this we all received the ashes, each child doing so with great love and respect. As we now journey through lent together we aim to grow closer to Jesus through acts of kindness. I wonder what you have decided to do as a family this lent?
On Thursday I (Mrs Marshall) returned to school. What a wonderful first two days we have had already! I feel very fortunate that I get to teach your wonderful children again. We wasted no time in growing our brains and travelled back in time to 43AD as advisors to Emperor Claudius. The children weighed up whether it was a good or a bad idea to invade Britain and extend the Roman Empire. We will be finding out what Claudius decided to do next week…
Lent
As we journey through Lent we are raising money for CAFOD in school. This has started with the Lentern boxes which you so wonderfully created and swapped on Friday with nursery.
We have also decided as a class to walk to Ashton Gardens to raise money for CAFOD. The children are very excited at the prospect of doing some litter picking whilst we are there. This will be a lovely way to give generously to our community. More details to follow on when this will take place.
ART CLUB starts on Tuesday morning for the following children. Please be in school for 8am.
John Paul, Lily, Gus, Matilda, Bethany, Jacob, Daisy, Rory, Jiana, Hugo, Tilly, Teddy, Ciaran, Sean, William, Rose and Grace.
Certificates
For being a determined learner. William, you have been so brave with your learning this week. You have challenged your brain in maths and have not been afraid to have a go. We know you can be just as resilient with your reading too! Well done William!
For being a focused and thoughtful learning partner. Finley, this week you have been a considerate learner and have gone above and beyond to help others learn. You were especially kind in Science, when you helped your learning partner with the experiment. Well done Finley!
Reminders
Please check Mrs Gregan’s blog this week as there are changes to the end of day routine - a little tweek!
This Monday we have our BOOK LOOK. The children have already selected the pieces of work that they cannot wait to share with you. Remember that this is a half an hour session starting at 9:00-9:30
Book Fair: The book fair will open for its final time on Monday morning before school, for anyone who hasn’t had chance yet.
World Book day: Please don’t forget that on Thursday, next week, we are celebrating World Book Day. Please come to school dressed as one of your favourite characters from a book.
As always if you need to speak to a teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Miss Bassett is the class teacher Monday-Wednesday and myself (Mrs Marshall), Thursday-Friday. c.bassett@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk e.marshall@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk

Computing - Coding
Please find the 2Do which has been set called, ‘Jumping monkey’ follow the steps to create the code and make the monkey reach the banana.
Remember to nest the commands correctly. if you want the command to happen after something else has happened it must be nested inside.
For example below: In the first image, the second command is not nested inside the first command, meaning the timer will start straight away and the monkey will move down after 1 second. Whereas, in the second image these commands are nested inside, meaning the commands will follow in sequence.
Optional Competition set by Mrs Gregan - still time to do this by Monday 6th February
Year 3 weekly blog - "Kindness is doing what you can, where you can, with what you have."
Our learning this week has been full of excitement and interest. We have been introduced to our science topic… electricity. The children could not wait to share their current knowledge about this topic. They also asked lots of great, curious questions which we hope to be able to answer over the coming lessons! We have already started to gain a greater awareness on energy sources, how some electrical items must be plugged into their power source, and others use a battery that stores the energy.
We have also had so much success in our computing lessons… we have certainly become much more confident when coding. This week we looked at how we could use timers when commanding an object to move. It was great fun!
We have taken to bridging over 100 in multiples of 10 this week, and learnt a fantastic method to make this super easy! The children were amazing each one was so focused to really make sure they grasped the method before setting off to use it with such confidence and enjoyment! I wonder: ask your child how they could answer 80 + 50, using the new bridging method. On Thursday and Friday we explored the relationship between multiplication and division - plus some really tricky word problems - good paired talk here!
In English we have really been developing our reading skills, using the punctuation to help us to read with understanding and expression. We have now read up to chapter 3 of Ice Cat, and we are once again, left desperate to read on! Along with our reading skills, we have also taken time to understand how we can use prepositions when writing, and each child has completed a lovely piece of writing, including lots of prepositions to explain how Tom built his ice cat. In geography we wrote our very own non-chronological report all about our a favourite artic animal. We challenged ourselves to use conjunctions to join up clauses!Well done everybody!
Finally, we started our class council with a beautiful worship based on the Beatitudes. We reflected on what makes us happy - then we listened to the words of Jesus and we could see that our happiness is connected to our relationships with one another and our God.
Have a blessed weekend.
Certificates
Well done to Joseph who keeps on trying and trying again- just like Sadie Spider. It is not what we do sometimes that matters it is how we tackle it the next time. Every small improvement leads to greater success
Well done Rory - we could give you every character Rory, you are focused, creative, determined and resilient. I just loved the way you explained how you had used a rhetorical question in your non-chronological report. Just great!
Reminders
Oline Safety day is coming up on Tuesday 7th February. Get ready by joining in the competition Mrs Gregan has set for the school.
Year 3 homework to be handed in by 2.2.23
READING
Continue to read every night! Please listen to your child’s fluency. It is good to let them read a page twice or even three times- building up their word recognition and really focusing on reading the punctuation - pausing is all the correct places
MATHS - Daily practice
Dear parents we need you help- last week the children were asked to complete 5-10 minutes of TT Rockstars everyday. They need to log on and play in the garage. I have shown them in class. 9 children haven’t been on their account this week. I have had a quiet word with them to explain how important it is to learn these facts and to know that I am able to track their progress. Thank you to everyone who started to make this part of their routine.
Passwords in homework books- display somewhere at home to.
ENGLISH
This week we have read chapter 3 of Ice Cat. Below is a copy of this chapter. I would like you to read this chapter to an adult. When reading please make sure you focus on using the punctuation and pausing when you see a comma or full stop. Start a new sentence with a new tone - its a new mini story. Use commas for a mini pause too.
Parent grade: (are we improving the following…)
1. reading each word correctly and accurately
2. reading in an interesting voice
3. reading at a decent pace - not too fast or slow.
4. Ability to use punctuation
Once you have done this, just like last week, can you summaries what happened in this chapter in 1 or 2 sentences. We will share these next week.
SCIENCE
Find out who was the inventor(s) of electricity. Tell me a little bit about their early life. Can you find out as much information as you can about how their invention came about. How did their invention effect or change our world? We will share our findings next week.
ONLINE SAFETY- EXCITING CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY!
Competition set by Mrs Gregan - to be in on Monday 6th February (optional)
Year 3 weekly blog 18.1.23 - "Be the reason someone smiles today."
It’s been another great week in class with lots of fantastic learning! On Monday many of the children couldn’t wait to share how they have been practicing their 8 times tables, we must say, you have been very creative in finding fun and effective ways to help remember these number facts!
This week in RE we have been focusing on understanding the Hail Mary. We have had a great discussion about the meaning of this prayer, and how we are able to say this prayer whenever we find ourselves wanting help from our Mother Mary. We have been very enthusiastic to create our own acts of prayer and liturgy in small groups. Each group needed to decide on what theme their worship would be about, what piece of scripture they could read to highlight their theme and a reflection for their friends to take part in. They will invite the rest of their class friends into their worships over the coming weeks. We are sure these will be such special moments to look forward to each week.
In our English learning we have discovered our ‘reading brains’. This is a reading strategy that allows us to make connections in what we have read, and remember the key points and the order of the story. We created a big spider diagram to share what has happened in chapter 1 of our book, ‘Ice Cat’. We discussed how it is always important when reading to create our own reading brain, to help us remember and fully understand what we are reading. We have also moved on to chapter 2, which we read on Tuesday. This Chapter taught us a lot about the main character Tom and his Dad, who we read is very poorly. Together, we thought carefully about how Tom was feeling from what the author tells us, we used the text for our evidence. We cannot wait to read the next chapter next week!
Mrs Hotchkiss swooped in on Thursday and Friday and the children are really rocking those 8 timestable facts. They have also explored 10 different artic animals researching them ready to write a non chronological report on them next week!! In dance, we completed phrase one of our Stone Age performance - hunting down two woolly mammoths! In Music we learnt a new upbeat song - we now need to perfect our recorder playing to go with it!
Certificates
Jiana you have been a super focused Kuba Crab - both Miss Bassett and Mrs Hotchkiss could see how hard you have worked. It is great to see you thinking deeply and expressing your ideas on your wipeboard for the teachers to see. Keep up the good work!
Daisy- what enthusiasm! You brim with a love of learning, you’re quick to make links and find the solution to a problem. You have really controlled your desire to shout out - you have been just brilliant ! Well done for using your super neat handwriting too - all the time!
Reminders
Lip Balms and creams for chapped skin are considered medical in school and need to be in the care of the class teacher. Please ask your child to hand the item to the teacher and the teacher will allow them to administer. It is very important that children do not share these items - thank you for your help in this matter.
Homework Must be handed in by/on Thursday ready to go back out on Friday.
PE remains Monday and Friday. It is cold at the moment so a beanie/bobble hat for PE Monday would be great.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

READING
Readig take priority - as always. Please read daily with your child.
COMPUTING
This week we have continued our learning of coding. We have set you the 2Do, ‘Magician’. To complete this activity you must follow each step, carefully listening to the short videos at the start of each task. Remember that if you are still stuck you can use the HINT button to give you more help.
One of our new words in computing this week was, NESTED. We soon realised how important it is to make sure we nested our commands together so that they ran in the correct order. You will need to be mindful of this when you complete this challenge at home:
ENGLISH
Along with discovering our reading brains, we also looked at how to summerise and did this after reading Chapter 1. In your homework book we would like you to have a go at summarising Chapter 2. Remember to do this correctly, your summery must only be one or two sentences long. It must include only the key information about this chapter.
What was the point to this chapter? What did we find out? Can you make your sentence/s into complex a sentence/s by adding: when, if, because, although, while, since, until, before, after, so?
MATHS
TT Rock stars!!!
I would like the children to complete TT Rock Stars everyday for 5 - 10 minutes. Could you please organise a time in the day when they have to complete their “TT - time”. It could be after breakfast - great for getting your brain going. TT Rockstars systematically and intuitively interacts with the user as they learn their multiplication and division facts off by heart!! I am able to see how much daily time was spent on the program and each child has a heat map in the teacher’s dashboard. This heat map displays each fact in a different colour- red for the facts they don’t know yet - then it turns orange then yellow then green the quicker they become. Eventually they become a Rock Legend!!

Reminders for January
PE DAYS: Outdoor PE will remain on a Monday. Indoor PE will change and now EVERYBODY will have PE on Thursdays.
We come back to school on Wednesday 4th January. We cannot wait to hear all about your Christmas holidays and what you have been up to.
Year 3 home learning
From now until we return, we want you to relax and enjoy Christmas. Spend time together, take the pressure off… bake, watch your favourite films, visit somewhere new, re-organise your bedroom, learn how to play a new board game, GET CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN!
We would love for you to share these memories that you make… you have our emails and can send any photos that you would like us to share in class when we return.
Try and get lost in a new book, visit the library if you can. When we return we will be looking at describing settings and characters… maybe you could start to magpie ideas from books that you read over the summer. These ideas could go into your homework book so that you have them to use when in school.
Remember that you have TT Rockstars to continue to use. Can you earn enough points to make your character Christmassy?
All our love, and wishing you the most wonderful Christmas.

Year 3 - "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear." - Will Ferrell
What a fun way to end our week! It was wonderful to see all of the Key Stage 2 children making such lovely Christmas memories during our Christmas party today. The singing, and roaring laughter filled the school with Christmas cheer! All of the children had a wail of a time playing musical statues, pass the parcel, silent footsteps … and who can forget those cheeky forfeits!
We had another beautiful moment yesterday as we performed our Christmas carol concert! The nerves started to grow as we walked to church, but as soon as the music started the children were ready to share the Christmas story with such enthusiasm and pride. It was absolutely beautiful and certainly brought a tear (or ten) to my eye!
Along with all of the festivities, we have been cracking on with our dragon writing. We are prepped and ready to go for our big independent write on Monday! We aim to put all of our learning to good use, so that together, we can create a ‘Dragon Hunters guide’. The children have shared with one another their homework from last week, and have discussed the dragons that they have spotted in recent weeks. We have also spent time discussing key features of non-chronological reports and we plan on using this knowledge, along with our growing grammar and vocabulary, to help us when we write our own non-chronological report about our dragons!
Reminders:
Please bring a carrier bag with you on Monday as we will be clearing out our trays and sending bits and pieces home.
Christmas dinner is on Monday next week.
Next week we break up at 2pm on Tuesday.
Wishing you the most wonderful, Holy and happy Christmas.

Year 3 Weekly blog 9.12.22 - "Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are."
It is hard to believe that we are already beginning the third week of advent! It is important that we pause and reflect on our advent journeys thus far. A huge part of our journey in Year 3 has been to always think of the impact our actions have on those around us… When we tell you how touching it is to see our class come together on the altar, helping one another and singing with such passion… it is simply beautiful. We know that when you watch them next week you will be filled with joy!
When in the classroom we have been sharing the children’s all important home learning. Our children set off with great enthusiasm and interest to create meaningful pieces of artwork relating to our learning of the Annunciation of Mary, using the artwork that has already been created to represent this special moment in our Catholic faith. It was wonderful to watch the children discuss the research that they had accomplished at home, sharing their ideas with one another and discussing why they had chosen to include certain key features in their artwork. We look forward to sharing this with you in the future.
Let’s Celebrate…. Congratulations to John Paul and Tommy who receive the certificates this week. John Paul you receive an enthusiastic Bobby Bee certificate. You always participate in lessons with such enthusiasm and interest. You love to share your ideas with others and you have been really quick and excited when playing out maths times tables games. Keep up the good work John Paul. Well done! Tommy, you receive a Co-operative Roger Robin certificate. You are a kind and thoughtful friend and you like to be helpful in class. These little acts of kindness are always appreciated Tommy, thank you, they don’t go unnoticed.
Staff Changes for the New Year Update:
Following Ms Marham's appointment as Year 2 class teacher for Miss Woodend's maternity leave, it has been decided that she will remain with Year 2 for the year. Therefore, Mrs Hotchkiss (Thurs and Fri) will be working along Miss Bassett (Mon-Wed) in Year 3 until Miss Lane's return after February half term.
Reminders:

In your homework this week you should find a promt sheet to help you to create/design your own dragon. This dragon is going to be your main character in our innovated non-chronological report, which we will be writing next week. Please draw and label your main character (dragon). Include descriptive vocabulary that you would like to include in your independent writing. Think about/describe how your character will move (verbs/adverbs). Our innovated report will be based on the Manchester Ridge-Back. To all of our enthusiastic Bobby-bees you will already be thinking about the original non-chronological report and how you would like to change and improve it.
Year 3 Weekly Blog 2.12.22 - "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it."
What a wonderful way to end our week, a trip to the panto! We had a great time with year 4 and have come back feeling full of Christmas cheer!
We’ve had a busy week and have continued to deepen our understanding of numbers that added together make one hundred. We have been using 100 square grids to help us with this. I wonder Year 3, how confident can you share the method we have learnt this week to answer this sum: 26 + 74 (remember first to make 10 ones-show your family members how we partition these numbers to help us).
We have also welcomed a new member to our class, a rather shy, yet mischievous dragon. He heard that we were learning about dragons and thought we might be able to take good care of him. He likes to fly around the classroom when we aren’t there! I wonder where we might find him next week… (Extra homework-what could we name our class dragon?) We have been finding out many facts about dragons and have used last week’s homework to write questions to each other about their own dragon sightings.
Let’s Celebrate…
Gus for being a focused Cooper Crab! We have been SO impressed with your effort towards your maths and English learning this week! You thought of so many wonderful questions to discover more about dragons and your presentation was great too! Keep it up Gus, you have really impressed us!
William for being a keep improving Lizzie Ladybird! We have loved to see you reaching for the stars this week, improving your ideas and not giving up when things get tricky! You are trying really hard with your reading skills and have have focused carefully in maths to understand numbers that make 100. Well done William!
Reminders:
Next week we will be busy with rehearsals to church. Please make sure your child brings a warm coat and hat ALL week.
On Wednesday we are walking to Church with Year 1 and Year 5 to celebrate mass together this advent. Once again they will need warm clothing to walk to and from church.
Christmas cards: As we have done in previous years, we kindly ask that instead of writing individual Christmas cards for the class, we use this money to raise money for Brian House. You can, if you wish, make a whole class card that we can display in our classroom.
Our Christmas performance is in church on Thursday 15th December at 2pm and 7pm.
Friday 16th December Key Stage 2 Christmas party. Children can come to school in party clothes and sensible shoes. They can bring a non fizzy drink and a small snack such as chocolate or a packet of crisps.
