Year One Weekly Blog - 28th March

Magic moments

RE

Our class liturgy this week was a lovely session, two children chose some lovely items out of our box and formed discussions around them, these items were a church and a tree. We then sang my lighthouse together.

We discussed all the events leading up to Jesus’ death this week, the children remembered them all brilliantly. We then read about Jesus’ resurrection and what happened when the women went to the tomb to bathe Jesus’ body in ointment. We discussed and decided which event was the saddest - the crucifixion, which event was the most shocking - the tomb being empty and which event was the most surprising - the resurrection.

Rather than using a prayer we already know for our class assembly, the children in Year One decided they wanted to create their own!

Dear God,

Thank you for our mummies.

They look after us.

They care for us.

They feed us.

And they love us.

Amen

English and Maths

We have done some fantastic sentence writing this week, we worked together to form sentences about Mr McGregor using the connective word “but” and the children then put their knowledge to practise by completing some independent sentences about Peter Rabbit. I have been wowed this week with their vocabulary and their knowledge of what goes into writing a good sentence. We ended our week by discussing syllables.

In Maths we have spent the week recapping the knowledge we already know. We have looked again at ordinal numbers, we have looked some more at partition and doing this in a systemic way.

The children have been loving cashing in their library passes from the reading challenge! They love choosing a book and spending some time in the library.

Science and Geography

In Science this week we looked at all of our materials and grouped them by whether they were transparent or opaque. The children did a brilliant job at remembering and made up some actions to go with the words.
Conversation starter: What does transparent mean? What does opaque mean? Can you find a material for each one?

In Geography we looked at some hot places, we discussed where on the Earth they might be and what they might be like. We looked at the Amazon Rainforest - how this is a hot but wet place and compared this to Egypt, which is a hot but dry place.
Conversation starter: What do you remember about these two countries? Which animal lives there?

We did some grouping in Science and the children were able to successfully put materials/items in the correct hoop! They showed either a T or an O with their hands, or they used our gestures to decide which hoop the object was going to go into.

Going deeper…

Conversation starter: What can you do to make someone special smile this weekend?
Challenge: Can you give someone in your family a compliment this weekend? Notice how it makes them and you feel.

Lets celebrate!

Well done to our certificate winner this week, we have had a focused learner in Amara. You have worked brilliantly this week and we are very proud of you, keep it up.

Our Virtue Star this week goes to…. Sydney! You have been so grateful and generous all week, super focused and ready to learn! You are always making the right choices, Well done!

The Year One children would love to celebrate their mummies! Happy Mother’s day to you all, I hope you have a lovely weekend together. I have made a separate blog for you to see the lovely things your children have said about you.

To celebrate performing our lovely assembly for you all, the children got to go into Year 2 to meet our resident ducklings! We sat in a circle whilst they ran round, nibbled us and sat on our knees!
